I made my first sgian dubh for myself (pictured in the banner) when I was unable to find a quality, handmade, authentic sgian dubh that was reasonably priced and would be comfortable to wear all day. My Sgian Dubh are one-of-a-kind, no two are ever exactly alike, and all come with a soft natural leather sheath. The handles are shaped to fit comfortably against the leg.

How to Care for your Sgian Dubh

Handles:
A soft cloth can be used to buff the handle and bring out the natural shine. I don't recommend using polishes or waxes, but if you do, I suggest testing a small area on the back as these can affect the color of the wood.

Blades:
Carbon steel blades will rust; care should be taken to keep the blades dry and protected. For this I recommend a quality gun oil such as Hoppes or Rem Oil, do not use food grade or vegetable oils. If your blade does develop rust, using a fine grade steel wool or soft scrubbing pad along with the oil will remove the rust, some discoloration will remain, but this does not harm the blade. Regular treatments with oil will help protect the blade and the sheath.

The International Sgian Dubh is full sized and looks like a tradition Sgian Dubh with the sheath on, but under the sheath is a blunt wood blade.

Variations do occur

Marc D. Ankerud Sgian Dubh have unsharpened blades as they are only intended for use as part of your highland wear and for display. It is recommended that the blades not be sharpened as they are not intended to be used for any cutting or utility purpose. The sheaths that come with a Marc D. Ankerud Sgian Dubhs are custom made to fit snugly around the blade and so cannot be used with a sharpened blade.
